Fatima Ismatulla

Fatima is an undergraduate student at the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College at FAU. Currently pursuing a B.S. in Cellular Neuroscience Honors with a minor in Data Science and a certificate in Research, she is a promising scholar with a keen interest in understanding the complexities of the brain. Her past research experience includes organometallic catalysis, behavioral neuroendocrinology, mental health of international students, and herb-based interventions for neurodegenerative diseases.

She is the first undergraduate student to join the Tian Lab at MPFI, and is a successful 2024 John Nambu Memorial Summer Research Fellow. Her current work in the lab includes histology, and under the mentorship of postdocs Dr. Akash Pal and Dr. Emily Wright, will include the development of specialized biosensors for neurotransmitters as well as neuropsychiatric therapeutics. Furthermore, motivated by her desire to bridge gaps in research and address population disparities in neuropsychiatric healthcare, Fatima aspires to pursue an MD-PhD program specializing in neuropsychiatry with an emphasis on refugee global health. Her ultimate goal in the future is to contribute to the development of targeted interventions for neuropsychiatric disorders, especially PTSD among women and children in refugee populations. Moreover, with a lifelong commitment to advancing the field of neuropsychiatry and improving diverse patient outcomes, Fatima is honored to be a part of the Tian Lab and looks forward to advancing the promising, spectacular research taking place.
